The Big Bounce Object: Exploring the Origins of the Universe

Astrophysics Theory Sculpture by Timo Brunkhorst

Inspired by the Big Bounce Theory and the Fibonacci sequence, Timo Brunkhorst's The Big Bounce Object is a captivating sculpture that delves into the mysteries of the universe.

This unique sculpture represents a theoretical model of the origin of the universe, combining the current scientific knowledge about our universe with the Fibonacci sequence. The Big Bounce Theory, one of several theories exploring the temporal ending and beginning of the universe, describes an oscillation of space and time. The Big Bounce Object illustrates the familiar three dimensions known to us and highlights the strong interrelation between time and space.

Made from copper and stainless steel, the sculpture features a symmetrical and quadratic structure. The watercut shape is meticulously finished through sawing, grinding, and polishing by hand. The color gradient on the copper discs, ranging from copper to a vibrant purple, adds depth and visual interest to the piece. Each observer experiences their own unique gradient, making the sculpture a dynamic and interactive artwork.

With dimensions of 280mm in width, depth, and height, The Big Bounce Object is a free-hanging sculpture that is best displayed at a height of approximately 1300mm from the ground. Its captivating colors and intricate design make it a standout piece in any art installation or contemporary setting.

The project, which started in August 2016 and concluded in January 2017 in Hamburg, Germany, was exhibited in Lueneburg in March 2017. Throughout the design process, Timo Brunkhorst conducted extensive research on astrophysics, particularly focusing on theories about the Big Bang. He also collaborated with an astrophysics professor from the Max Planck Institute in Heidelberg, Germany, to ensure the accurate interpretation and representation of the scientific concepts.

The Big Bounce Object has received recognition for its exceptional design. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Fine Arts and Art Installation Design category in 2018. This prestigious award recognizes designs that are well-designed, practical, and innovative, meeting professional and industrial requirements. The sculpture's integration of industry best practices and competent technical characteristics contribute to a better world through its fulfillment and positive impact.
